Coleville Post Office

Straddling the California/Nevada border on U.S. Route 395, the Coleville Post Office is nestled between the slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains and the West Walker River in Mono County. This post office was established in 1868 and the first Postmaster was Benjamin G. Hartshorn. The original building no longer exists, and was replaced with this newer “generic” U.S. Post Office design shared elsewhere in this region (Beatty, NV and Goldfield, NV).

About Coleville

Coleville is named after Cornelius Cole, who served as a representative to the U.S. Congress and later as a Senator for California. Coleville is home to its 419 residents, a market, churches and schools, and cattle ranches only 8 miles south of Topaz Lake, Nevada. Visitor activities include hiking, trout fishing (!), cycling, horse back riding, birdwatching and kayaking. Situated on the eastern side of the Sierras, Coleville’s climate is dry and classified as warm-summer Mediterranean. It really doesn’t get too hot in the summer, which makes it perfect for outdoor activities!
