Mono Lake in the Eastern Sierra Nevada

Eerie yet picturesque, Mono Lake is a saline soda lake located in the Sierra Nevada mountains of Mono County, California. The lake is teaming with brine shrimp which attracts migratory birds and other wildlife.

Tufa Ships

These limestone “ships” known as “tufa” are mineral structures formed when fresh water bubbles up from the bottom of the lake and mixes with the calcium carbonate.
